You've seen the glossy TV ads with smiling driving instructors, nice shiny cars and the promises of earning £30,000 a year and having the freedom to work the hours you want, right?

Becoming a qualified Driving Instructor is not as simply as starting a new job!

Still want to be a driving instructor?

Here is a brief overview of the process.

You should budget for around 60 hours for paid for professional training (and many more of private practise/home study). The link on the left will take you to test fees page.

It takes a long time! Theoretically it could be done in 19 weeks. Realistically is it’ll take around 18 months.

Before you spend any money you need to be accepted, so your first steps are:

  1. Get CRB checked (‘phone for form 0870 850 2455) Once checked you will receive back a report and a ADI personal reference number.
  2. Fill in ADI 3 form with the above info and send off  (‘phone for form 0300  200 1122 or download the form here>>>

Once accepted it’s safe to start training.
